Perc Test and Septic Installation Information

This will serve as clarification on the Genesee County Health Department’s policy on lot evaluations for a new build home.

Please understand that perc test appointments take time to schedule. We typically recommend applying for your perc test several weeks prior to when you need the test completed. Once the application has been submitted, you can call the area sanitarian to schedule an appointment.

You will need have a backhoe operator (with their own backhoe) for your appointment; we do not supply a backhoe or backhoe operator.
•Perc tests are only valid for 5 years.
•Issued permits are valid for 1 year from date of issuance.

The Health Department can only accept applications that are submitted with the necessary supplemental information.
PLEASE NOTE: THE PERC TEST APPLICATION AND SEPTIC PERMIT APPLICATION CANNOT BE COMPLETED ONLINE. WE MUST HAVE THE ORIGINAL FORM. (WE CANNOT ACCEPT A COPY)

1. On-site Sewage Disposal Application with Part A completed, signed, and dated.

LOTS MUST HAVE A STREET ADDRESS OR WE CANNOT DO THE PERC TEST.

You may pay in person with cash, check made to GCHD or Genesee County Health Department, or *VISA, MasterCard, or Discover.

When you are ready to pull the septic permit to build, you must supply a site plan and pay another fee

1. Scaled Site Plan Drawing – We must have this site plan before we can issue the permit.

*Lot Dimensions
*Directional arrow indicating NORTH
*Location of the house, garage, any out building, and any water (ie. shed; barn; pond; pool, etc.)
*Location of the driveway
*Location of septic area & reserve septic area
*Location of new well
*Distance septic field is from the house & 2 adjacent property lines
*Distance from the new well to septic tank and septic field

2. Septic Permit Fee – Additional fee of $210 for a residential property or $280 for a commercial property.

You must obtain a permit before having a licensed septic installer do any work. Septic Installers must be licensed through the Genesee County Health Department (for a list of licensed septic installers, click here).

This procedure will allow us to have all information necessary to make a thorough evaluation of the property, and keep our records consistent and complete.
