Breastfeeding Education and Support

WIC_pregmom (1) 2The Genesee County WIC agency and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend breastfeeding for at least the first year of life or longer. All WIC agencies have trained staff ready to assist mothers with the basics of breastfeeding.

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselors provide educational resources, breastfeeding support, and mother-to-mother counseling to all pregnant and breastfeeding moms. You can contact the Breastfeeding Peer Counselors at (810) 237-4606.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor support is FREE to any pregnant and breastfeeding mom (not just WIC participants) and can help you find answers to your questions about feeding your baby. Peer Counselors are moms who have breastfed their babies for at least one year and are certified to help other moms.

Peer Counselors will:

    • Provide phone support and after-hours support
    • Help you deal with problems such as poor latch, engorgement, milk supply, sore nipples, and more
    • Provide breast pump education for returning to work or school
    • Offer breastfeeding outreach to the community
