How To Apply For A Water Well Permit

WELL PERMIT APPLICATIONS are NOT available electronically.
They are triplicate forms and cannot be made available by email or on the website.

This will serve as clarification on the Genesee County Health Department’s policy for the installation of a water supply system.

You must call MISS DIG 811 prior to any work being done.

The Health Department can only accept applications that are submitted three (3) working days prior to the planned construction date.

Applications should be submitted as follows: 
 

  1. Application for a Water Well Permit completed, signed, and dated.  
  2. Scaled Site Plan Drawing is required prior to permit issuance.

    *Property dimensions
    *Location of old well, if applicable
    *Location of new well
    *Dimensions from new well to contaminates (septic or sewer line)
    *Distance from new well to the house
    *Distance from new well to two adjacent property lines.
  3. Cash or Check payable to “Genesee County Health Department” or “GCHD”
      (We can only accept credit/debit cards in person at our office)

Private Residential Well……………………………………..  $200.00
Public Non-Community Well (Type III)……………………….  $300.00
 

*Once a site visit has been made – there will be no refunds or transfer of fees.

This procedure will allow us to have all information necessary to make a thorough evaluation of the property, and keep our records consistent and complete.

Please stop by our office in person to get a permit or call us so that we can mail you a permit.

After your well has been drilled, you will need to test your water for bacteria (more info here). You can use our lab (charge of $15), or you can use another lab and submit your satisfactory results to us. If you choose our lab, you must use one of our sanitary bottles (available free of charge).

Water samples are accepted Monday thru Thursday before 3:00 pm at 630 S. Saginaw Street, in the Floyd J. McCree Courts and Human Services Center, on the 2nd floor (Environmental Health office). The office is closed from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm daily, and we cannot accept samples on the last day of the week.
